PTO Newsletters
Encounter, the newsletter of Pedagogy and Theatre of Oppressed is here!
The publication of a PTO newsletter has often been sporadic. We’re working to change that, and we’re hoping you’ll want to help. Recently the board decided to produce a newsletter every October and every April, and this issue marks the beginning of the first volume to be released since setting that goal. We hope this twice-yearly contact will make us feel more connected as an organization. We also hope it will make PTO’s planning and decision-making processes more transparent.
But what should each issue include? That’s where you come in. So far, we envision a newsletter that will update the membership on conference planning, board meetings, and other PTO news. In addition, we’ll feature spotlights on specific PTO work. (Typically, we’ll try to cover at least one PO project and one TO project and to represent diverse countries and regions; this early issue features only one spotlight.) We also hope to include poetry, photos, visual art, etc. We value multiple forms of critical conversation as we learn about and process each other’s work. What else would you like to propose? Dream alongside us.
Members will receive an email each time a new issue is available for downloading from the website. In an effort to be environmentally sustainable and reduce costs, our primary distribution mode will be electronic. If, however, you would prefer to receive the newsletter in paper form by mail—or you know members who don’t have computer access—we will be happy to accommodate requests to be put on the mailing list for our limited print run.
So how can you get involved? There's a variety of options.
We need people to:
1) volunteer to write articles,
2) email ideas, especially suggestions for projects to cover in our PTO spotlights,
3) email your relevant poetry, visual art, photos, etc., and/or
4) indicate your interest in translating some of our short articles from English into other
languages (a future goal).
To volunteer for any of the following—or to request printed paper versions of the newsletter—please email co-editor Kelly Howe at kellybhowe@yahoo.com. Join us as we continue to work toward a newsletter that reflects the spirit, diversity, and creativity of PTO. ~Kelly Howe
